At Techmodal, we pride ourselves on being a collaborative, creative data consultancy – and that’s reflected in our new community structure. We’ve brought together our experts into three focused communities: Decision Support, Data Solutions, and Consultancy & Delivery.
This new structure isn’t just about defining what we do — it’s about strengthening how we support our customers. By combining expertise across our communities, we connect skills, share ideas, and solve complex challenges faster. Each community has a distinct purpose, yet they are closely linked – helping customers unlock the full potential of their people, equipment, and technology, with data at the core.
Our Decision Support community helps clients make faster, smarter decisions. By combining expertise in Operational Analysis, Modelling & Simulation, and Data Exploitation, we deliver the clarity and insight decision-makers need to act with confidence – before the conversation moves on.
But what does this mean in practice? To explain, we’ve asked the leads from each specialism to describe their approach and how they help clients achieve better outcomes.
Craig Walls, Operational Analysis Lead
To kick things off, we spoke to Craig Walls, who leads our Operational Analysis specialism. His team works at the earliest stage of problem-solving — helping clients understand what’s really going on before jumping to solutions.
"When organisations come to us, they often know something isn’t working – but they’re not always sure what the real problem is. Our job is to unpack the challenge, ensuring their time, people, and investment are focused on the right priorities."
- We work closely with clients to understand their goals, challenges, and constraints.
- We focus on delivering insights quickly to provide useful answers fast, refining the details over time.
- We guide clients to balance cost vs capability, ensuring decisions are practical and effective.
- Our deep understanding of Defence systems, operations, and processes means we deliver solutions that fit the real-world context.
- We’re trusted partners – working closely with clients to shape strategies that deliver real value.
One of the biggest challenges in Defence is managing operational risks when working alongside allies, partners, and third-party providers. Our customer needed to quantify and prepare for business continuity risks – particularly the impact of cyber threats.
We designed and delivered a programme of wargames to explore how teams identify, respond to and recover from cyber incidents. By simulating attacks on confidentiality, integrity, and availability, we helped decision-makers test their assumptions and develop more effective response strategies.
The result? For the first time, Defence leaders could balance efficiency with operational effectiveness. The wargaming approach also gave teams actionable ways to think about cyber resilience – and created a shared framework for managing risks with partners.
Roger Walton, Modelling & Simulation Lead
Next, we caught up with Roger Walton, who heads up our Modelling & Simulation team. His specialists use data, models, and scenario testing to help clients explore options and make informed choices with confidence.
"Our role is all about testing ideas and finding the best path forward. Whether we're exploring workforce structures, supply chain strategies, or future scenarios, we build models that simulate real-world environments to help clients understand their options."
- We use a combination of tools, techniques, and methodologies to explore scenarios, test options, and predict outcomes.
- Even when data is limited, we can still model concepts, theories, and behaviours – helping clients identify what data they need to collect next.
- Our methods include techniques such as Agent-Based Modelling (ABM), which is ideal for exploring complex behaviours and interactions.
- We focus on speed as well as accuracy – delivering insights quickly enough to inform fast-moving decisions.
- Our ability to blend different modelling approaches ensures we provide clear options and practical steps, even in uncertain environments.
Our customer needed to assess and improve the readiness of a critical fleet, ensuring the right people, resources, and infrastructure were available to meet operational demands. Traditional planning methods couldn’t fully capture the complexity of maintenance schedules, workforce availability, and mission requirements – leading to inefficiencies and capability gaps.
To solve this, we used Agent-Based Modelling (ABM) to simulate fleet operations and test different strategies. This allowed decision-makers to explore trade-offs between cost, availability, and effectiveness, and highlighted bottlenecks that were holding readiness back.
The result? Increased fleet readiness, reduced downtime, and greater confidence in resource and planning decisions
Nicola Gill, Data Exploitation Lead
Finally, we spoke to Nicola Gill, who leads our Data Exploitation specialism. Her team brings structure, clarity, and insight to complex datasets — transforming confusion into confident, data-led decisions.
"Many clients are overwhelmed with data – they know they have valuable information but can’t see the wood for the trees. Our role is to connect the dots, clean the noise, and uncover the insights that matter."
- We connect, clean, and structure data to provide a single version of the truth.
- We go beyond dashboards – ensuring insights are intuitive, meaningful, and actionable.
- We don’t just deliver answers – we guide clients to challenge assumptions and ask the right questions.
- Our data instincts mean we spot patterns, trends, and opportunities others might miss.
- We empower clients by sharing our knowledge, ensuring they feel confident using the insights we provide.
A UK government office needed to improve how it understood and used data across its global operations. With information spread across multiple departments and formats, it was difficult to get a consistent picture of performance, risks, and priorities — limiting the ability to make fast, informed decisions.
Working closely with stakeholders across the organisation, we identified, cleaned, and integrated key datasets, bringing everything together into a single, unified data platform. We then developed an interactive dashboard, giving leaders real-time access to the insights that matter most — from operational trends to resource utilisation and programme impact.
The result was greater clarity, consistency, and control. With a single source of truth, teams can now spot trends earlier, make decisions faster, and focus efforts where they’ll deliver the greatest value.
- Our Decision Support community combines three powerful specialisms – Operational Analysis, Modelling & Simulation, and Data Exploitation – ensuring our clients get clear, practical insights that drive better decisions.
- We balance speed with precision – delivering insights quickly enough to guide decisions, even in fast-moving environments.
